The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center & Cincinnati Museum Center

About the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center:
Opened in 2004, in Cincinnati, Ohio, our purpose is to tell the story of the struggle for freedom in the United States and around the world through exhibits and programming that focus on efforts to abolish slavery in all its forms to make liberty and justice a reality for all people.

The Freedom Center serves to inspire modern abolition by connecting the lessons of the Underground Railroad with today’s freedom fighters. It also serves as a forum for convening dialogues and community conversations that help to advance the cause of freedom, equality, civil and human rights.

Freedom Center programs educate students and the general public on the enduring legacy of the Underground Railroad. Exhibits explore the historical and contemporary lessons of overcoming enslavement and oppression, confronting “unfreedoms”: racism, illiteracy, genocide, hunger and tyranny, as well as the importance of multicultural cooperation required to achieve inclusive freedom. Included in these programs are five grade-level specific school tours that align with state and national standards. Our programs extend the opportunity for continued learning and deeper understanding through pre- and post-visit lesson plans, digital learning, family programs, community dialogues, and teacher institutes.

Serving nearly 120,000 visitors annually, the Freedom Center is a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate, a Site of Conscious and has just recently been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), joining the ranks of the 4.5% of the 17,500 accredited museums in the country.
