Judge Does The Right Thing and Temporarily Shuts Down Trump Anti-DEI Orders For HBCU 1890s National Scholars Program (7041 hits)

USDA Reinstates 1890 National Scholars Program, Empowering HBCU Students Nationwide

In a significant and uplifting development, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the reinstatement of the esteemed 1890 National Scholars Program. This pivotal initiative, established in 1992, offers full-tuition scholarships to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), aiming to cultivate the next generation of leaders in agriculture, food, and natural resource sciences.

The program's suspension earlier this month had raised concerns within the HBCU community and among advocates for educational equity. However, the USDA's decision to promptly reinstate the program underscores its unwavering commitment to supporting diverse talent and ensuring that students from underserved communities have access to quality education and career opportunities in vital sectors.

Leadership and Community Reactions

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins expressed enthusiasm about the program's revival, stating, "The 1890 National Scholars Program is instrumental in fostering innovation and diversity within the agricultural sector. We are dedicated to empowering students at our nation's HBCUs and providing them with the resources and opportunities they need to excel."

The reinstatement has been met with widespread acclaim from HBCU leaders, students, and alumni. Dr. Glenda Glover, President of Tennessee State University, remarked, "This decision reaffirms the USDA's commitment to our institutions and our students. The 1890 Scholars Program not only alleviates financial burdens but also opens doors to transformative careers."

Students currently benefiting from the program have expressed relief and gratitude. Je’Milya Hudson, an 1890 Scholar at Alcorn State University, shared, "Being part of this program has been life-changing. The reinstatement ensures that I and many others can continue our education and pursue our dreams without interruption."

Key Benefits of the 1890 National Scholars Program

  • Full Financial Support: Covers tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

  • Paid Internships: Opportunities to gain practical experience with the USDA.

  • Career Placement: Potential for noncompetitive conversion to a permanent position upon graduation.

Eligibility Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).

  • Acceptance to or current enrollment at one of the 19 designated 1890 Land-Grant Universities.

  • Pursuing a degree in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences, or related disciplines.
